The Bok Center has long been a friend of Harvard’s Scholars at Risk Program, a program that provides ten-month sanctuary for accomplished intellectuals at risk of persecution in their home countries.  This year, Sarah Jessop and Marlon Kuzmick worked with Beekan Erena to communicate his research and tell the story of the political violence he and other members of the persecuted Oromo ethnic group faced in his native Ethiopia.  Erena received training on speaking and visual storytelling skills that is much the same as what the Bok Center offers the Harvard Horizons scholars, new faculty, and faculty who are preparing to teach for HarvardX.
